Individual Counseling
Individual therapy is a 50 minute session. It is preferable to have the first session be 90 minutes as much history is gathered. Individual therapy is appropriate when deep issues need to be discussed without another present. This type of therapy is often the most intense, focusing on history, what is happening presently, how one relates to others, destructive patterns of self harm and addiction, and losses over ones life. DBT and CBT skills training is often done in individual sessions to help cope with stressful situations, painful feelings, and unhealthy relationships.
Couples Counseling
Couple's therapy is centered on the couple with the focus on the dynamic between the couple and re-occuring problems and struggles. It is often helpful to combine couples counseling with individual therapy.
Family Counseling
Family therapy focuses on the family as a system with the dynanics between members. It looks at the system, the communication between its members, dynamics that once worked but no longer are effective causing deep problems between members. When eating disorders or other addictions are discovered in adolescent clients family therapy is an effective researched based treatment that can offer support and coaching to parents as well as to uncover destructive patterns that exacerbate an eating disorder.
Adolescent Counseling
Adolescence is a difficult time to navigate for parents and their teenaged children. I have enjoyed my work with teenaged clients and try to create a safe place for them to be honest about what is going on deep inside. It is helpful to speak to parents in the initial session to hear concerns problems and get an accurate history. Depending on age of client speaking with both parents in a first session is preferred.
Phone and Internet Counseling
Phone sessions are a way to provide continued counseling when clients are out of town, away at college, or to provide a convenient way for eating disorder assessment for those too far away to commute or out of state. Phone assessment is helpful for clients suffering from eating disorders without access to that specialized treatment with trained therapists in eating disorder treatment. While face to face counseling is always preferable, it is not always possible. Counseling over the phone and Internet are alternative ways to provide creative support.
